“How’d you put that together?!”: Elizabeth

I’ve always said that I think one of the hardest styles to pull off is simple and classic. In a world where fashion can get pretty complicated, it is very refreshing to find someone who takes simple to a place that keeps it interesting. I ran into Elizabeth’s blog on where else other than twitter, I love that site! I fell in love with A Keene Sense of Style because it captures the way simple and chic should be displayed with classic lines and modern tweaks. It also helps that Elizabeth is such a doll! She wears her style effortlessly and it fits her so well!

Check out how she turned this look out and put it all together:

1. How did you put your look together?

I put this look together by starting with the key piece, this beautiful dress. I looked into my closet and knew that it was what I wanted to wear and then the wheels in my brain started spinning (as they usually do). I saw the scarf and immediately knew I wanted to incorporate it. First I tied it around my waist, and it just didn’t speak to me, then I tied it around my bag and it was the perfect addition. I kept the rest of my accessories simple by adding only a statement (clip-on) earring, and my go-to gold Michael Kors watch, followed by nude Louboutin shoes and my blush colored Prada bag. I love the way to pastels play off of each other. To top off this look I added a bold red lip for a little unexpected pop of color.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

I would describe my personal style as feminine and polished. I feel most confident when wearing dress and skirts and I always find myself gravitating towards materials like silk, chiffon, and lace.

3. What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

I would say to start with the dress and work around it. Be sure that whatever you pick is nicely tailored, a great fit always makes the outfit.

4. Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

Dress: ASOS, Earrings: Forever 21, Watch: Michael Kors, Bag: Prada, Scarf: Vintage, Shoes: Christian Louboutin

“How’d you put that together?” SBOC edition: Allison

This week is all about my experience at the Style Bloggers of Color + Mattiepalooza extravaganza last weekend. So it serves me right to feature one of the fabulous bloggers I met during my time at this amazing event!

Everyone meet Allison, she is the beauty behind the super chic style blog The Style Pundit and the moment she stepped into INK! art gallery she shined bright, literally. I am a sucker for the neon trend and Allison just executed it perfectly. Of course I had to take a tour of her blog and I love the way she presents herself in person because it totally reflects on  The Style Pundit. I especially love her tidbits post where she displays pictures of things that inspire her personal style. I am obsessed with her for the simple fact that her style embodies everything that makes me happy, classic, stylish and CHIC! Now, the look below is only a peek of what she brought during the SBOC weekend. Just trust me when I say she slayed every look she rocked last weekend and lets not even get into how gorgeous she is!

Check out how she put this neon fab look together:

1.    How did you put your look together?

This skirt was a recent purchase and what caught my eye, other than the bold print, was the cut of the skirt. I really loved the overlapped, slit affect it had. I think most people would think to pair a black or white shirt with this skirt, but I really wanted to make a colorful statement. That being said, I reached for the brightest shirt I own- neon yellow. I think when you have multiple primary colors in one piece, it is great to offset it with non-neutral colors. In this case, the neon shirt, pale blue clutch, coral lip, and tan pump.

2.    How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is very eclectic. Anything leopard, bright, androgynous, and 5″ and up is what I tend to go for. I really love contrast. I love mixing feminine pieces with a biker boot, because I really do not like pink or flowers. I love mixing prints and textures for a really intricate, complicated, eye-test, look. My main fashion mantra is to blend high and low pieces. In this neon look while I may be wearing a Theory blouse, I am carrying a $15 Target clutch. It is all about building a really blended closet, of investment pieces, trendy items, and closet staples.

3.    What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

Let go of the reins, and go all in for this look. Life is too short to blend in.

4.    Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

The shirt is Theory.
The skirt is Zara.
The pumps are Steve Madden.
The Lips are Revlon.
The Clutch is Target.

“How’d you put that together?”: Chantel Cupid

I met Chantel while on my wild adventure in New York during fashion week this past February and I instantly fell in love with her. She is super fun and super driven and such a hard worker. I enjoy her playful take on style and I think it suits her bubbly personality well. Chantel has found a great way of mixing classic, vintage and trendy all in one chic package.  Not only is she a budding fashionista, she is also the new owner of  La Chature Closet, which is a triple threat combo including an online consignment boutique, image consulting and personal shopping services. La Chature Closet is definitely serving up some fierce vintage pieces that I would love to get my hands on. The thing I like most about Chantels boutique is that it is truly a representation of who she is and I am so excited for her! 🙂

Get into how she put this super cute look together:

1. How did you put your look together?

When I first got this dress I was with an ex-coworker and she said to me “I would love to see how you put this together” in a very sarcastic way….my answer to her was “just wait and see”….in a very nonchalant way! So a few months later when the weather was appropriate I decided that I wanted to go for a 1960’s vintage look. The first garment I found in my closet was this S.G.Gilbert vintage dress from then that’s all I needed, this staple piece inspired my whole look. The floral print and light weight fabric was perfect for the weather not to add the cinched waist and low back features which accentuated my curves and complimented my body very well. The fit made me love the dress even more….. I chose to highlight the red from the print because I knew that this power color would complete this look exactly how I pictured it. My shoes were velvet with embedded jewels on the wedge, adding pearls to enhance my posh style …….And there you have it!

2. How would you describe your personal style?

My style is defined as classic yet trendy and glamorous.
I always say “modesty is the best policy” and this is why my personality reflects my form of dress. I’ll say similar to “First Lady” Jackie-O and Michelle Obama.

3. What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

This look is pretty meek; you just need your essential pieces. I would suggest that your dress has a cinched waist feature with a scoop or off the shoulder neckline. Add a print and mix a few bold colors to highlight the style of the dress. Top it off by accessorizing with some jewels and pearls.

4. Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

Dress: Consignment Vintage Boutique
Bag: Lord & Taylor
Shoes: Zappos.com
Pearls: Given to me by “Granny”

“How’d you put that together?”: Ty

She can recreate runway looks with ease, her personal style is clean, stylish and chic and she is always on point. Ty has been one of the victims to my blog stalking problem. The thing I love most about Ty is that every outfit she puts together always looks perfectly styled. I can never envision a way to add or take away from any of her looks, they fit her perfectly. Ty has found a way to mix words and wardrobes easily (pun intended) with great style and enjoyable reads. You know you’re a great writer when someone tries to steal your words and use them for their own, smh. Yes, someone definitely tried hijacking some of the content from Words & Wardrobes and Ty caught them red-handed! Ha! I love it! And let me just add that this little lady just had a beautiful baby girl and her waist line snapped back like the elastic waste band on a fresh pair of patterned leggings! Go on girl!

Now get into her look below to she how she put it together:

1. How did you put your look together?

When I created this look, I was just beginning to play with pattern-mixing (which I love), but with this outfit, I wanted to keep things simple by pairing the same print. Plus, I liked how the top was fitted on top but the skirt was flared (I’m a big fan of sartorial juxtaposition). At the time, I had just bought the shoes and was dying to wear them and I think they ended up going really well with the outfit.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

I like to say that my personal style is always evolving. It’s different from what it was when I started words & wardrobes 2 years ago, but I still like some of the same things (for example, prints, bright colors and chunky jewelry). Also, I’m learning to mix high and low (or at least my definition of high and low) and I’m amazed at how it can take your style up a notch.

3. What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

Choose colors that go together well. Black, white, and red is a classic color combination, which is why this look works. Also, because stripes are a fairly simple pattern, I tried to add something to give the outfit a little something extra—in this case, it’s the shoes.

4. Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

I fell in love with this Marc Jacobs skirt when I saw Ashley Tisdale wearing it in an issue of InStyle Magazine, so when I saw it deeply discounted at Barney’s, I didn’t hesitate to buy it. I bought the top at Zara and the shoes are from Lulu’s (both purchased last summer). Lastly, my bracelets and ring are from Forever 21, which is where I tend to go for accessories.

“How’d you put that together”: Taliah

Yes, this woman is FLY and when I say that I say it with confidence. I make it a point to visit as many other blogs as I can everyday. There are a few that no matter what time a day it is, if I get a new post email I just have to check it.  Fashion Was Here is certainly one of those blogs. Taliahs dope style is always on point. Whether she  is wearing a plain white top or a pretty printed bottom, I am always excited to see what’s new on her blog because there is always an unexpected twist, yes ma’am! Not to mention she is currently in the running for ‘Best personal style blog’ for the upcoming Style Bloggers of Color awards coming up in June! I totally agree with this nomination, so if you love her style as much as I do make sure to vote for her here.

Get into how she put this fab look together:
1. How did you put your look together?

I focused my look around my skirt because it is the most striking piece. The print of the skirt is very bold and I love the African-inspired flair it gives. I wanted to tone it down with solid colors for a classier vibe, especially since the skirt is short. I felt like the jacket was a perfect addition to the skirt due to its safari like style. The silk, pleated blouse was a good contrast to the rougher textures. My black pumps also had like a satin feel so I loved how they pulled the whole look together. To top it all off, my maroon wide brim hat made the outfit a bit more dramatic but also brought your eyes back to my skirt.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

Modern meets vintage. I am all about balance when it comes to my style but it also depends on my mood. I love to celebrate femininity in my wardrobe choices with a bit of edge.

3. What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

Make sure you have balance in an ensemble like this. Try to find a bottom that has interesting or bold colors and highlight at least 2 colors with your other pieces. Playing with different fabrics is a great way to show versatility and add depth to an outfit.

4. Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

My hat: Good Will, top: Loehmanns, skirt: H&M, jacket: Filene’s Basement, shoes: BCBG store, clutch: Louis Vuitton store.

“How’d you put that together”: Hilary

I ran into a picture of Hilary featured on Rocquelle’s weekly,Your Body is Fabulous series and easily fell in love with her style. Without even getting the chance to browse her blog to learn more about her, I could immediately tell that she had a fondness for art and design (of course I was totally right! 🙂 ). As I browsed through her personal style and interior design based blog, my brain went into inspiration overload! I simply adore her very clean-cut and whimsical style. She does wonders with cool prints, fun accessories and bright colors. Not to mention I’ve become completely obsessed with her color study posts, where she displays color inspirations from her various outings. Whenever I visit her blog I find myself blurting, “Pretty!”, to all that Hilary Inspired has to offer.

Get into how she put together this pretty spring time ensemble.

1. How did you put your look together?

To be honest, it happened pretty organically. I knew I wanted to play with high and low textures so, as I stood in front of my closet clothing rack, I knew the denim shirt and silk skirt were easy choices. From there, I honed in on the bright blue belt to accentuate the waist. The jewelry was meant to be simple and out of the way. Finally, the nude shoes were a must! I wanted something that would elongate the leg since the silk skirt was at a slightly longer length.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is greatly influenced by vintage cuts and patterns. I love color and am most interested in eclectic styling. Classic shapes with some unexpected twist are my thing.

3. What advice would you give someone who would like to achieve this look?

Find yourself an awesome denim or chambray shirt. It doesn’t have to be expensive but it does need to feel good. I like mine to fit a little looser… it gives the ensemble that casual, “boyfriend”-borrowed look. Mine was a thrifted piece and I wear it all the time!! Other than that, have fun with a dressier skirt. The mix and match is what makes this look so much fun!

4. Where did you purchase the items you are wearing?

Let me think…. okay, here’s the run down. Earrings, Nordstrom Rack // Denim Shirt, Thrifted // Bright Blue Belt, Vintage // Green Silk Floral Skirt, Thrifted // Beaded Purse, gift from mom 🙂 // Silver Bangle, Vintage // Nude Pumps, ShoeMint (Dominique, you’ll notice I’ve attached links to similar items for your readers as well).
